Ephesus; city of mother godess Artemis; her temple took its place among other wonders of the world and all other wonders were put in the shade. Early Ionian city was established around the Artemis temple but after a heavy flood the city was moved to it’s present location by Lysimachus; one of the successors of Alexander the Great and Romans controlled Ephesus 190 BC and made Ephesus capital of their province of Asia because of sheltered commercial harbour. Ephesus reached to its height of wealth and luxury between 1st to 4th Centuries AD; under the Roman rule. Ephesus was biggest city and busiest harbour of Asia Minor ;it was the harbour of the East and Roman Emperors adorned the city with beautiful monumental and public buildings. Ephesus played an important role in early Christianity; St. Paul, (who was the son of these lands ) and St. John Evangelist wrote some sections of new testament here.

The city was largely abandoned around 700 AD when the harbour completely filled in with river silt (despite repeated dredges during the city's history), removing its access to the Aegean Sea.
